34/365: Struggles of Working from Home

34/365: Struggles of Working from Home

Because of the ice on roads, sleet, and extreme temperatures outside (for Houston at least, come on northerners… :P), many of us worked from home on Thursday as well as Friday.

As you can see, it was a tough day. ;-) Turkish coffee, carrots, and sugary pecans.

Friday (day 35) was the great Houston Snowpocalypse.

19/365 - The Beautiful & Crisp Downtown Houston

19/365: The Beautiful & Crisp Downtown Houston

Today, most of the clouds cleared out & the sun shown vibrantly. Stellar weather. For lunch, I took a stroll down the block & ate outside in the sun. Mmmm, warming the bones. I love my view from our 10th floor office perch. If I sit up in my chair, this is what I can see. Blessed. Thank you, God!

Check out my little quick panorama too, here.

PROS Pricing, 3 Months All In

Leaving for my first day @ PROS!

Today marks 3 months since June 28, 2010 when I finally started full-time as a Junior Software Engineer at PROS Revenue Management after graduating from UH with a B.S. Computer Science, Business Option degree (resume).

I’ve actually been working with PROS for a while. In summer 2008 (check my tweet) & 2009, I was a software development intern working with a stellar group of developers, scientists, and project managers on the Pricing Science team. I employed agile and test-driven development methodology to code enhancements in the user interface for PROS’ Pricing Solution Suite using Flex, JavaScript, and Java. The internships were extremely enjoyable (great teammates & perks galore) & I learned an amazing amount!

Now as a real full-time employee, I’m a hybrid user interface / back-end (Flex & Java) developer on the Price Optimization team. My cubicle is on the north-east side of the building with a stellar view of downtown Houston. Having interned with PROS the past two summers has allowed me to quickly integrate with the team & our project tasks. It also helps that several of my teammates are from my Pricing Science team days. My team in two words, Helpful & Smart! Thanks for assisting me with my 1000s of questions. Every day I learn something new that I can apply in the next!

I look forward to helping simplify our complex code & speeding up our development process wherever possible.

I thank the Lord for providing me with this wonderful job and an opportunity to create & learn!

A big thanks to Zeke & execs who started up the PROS internship program for bright UH Honors College students. Nick, Josh, Jose, & I are all employees advancing PROS as a result of this program.

Walk & Work Mac Lab

The professors of my iPhone Ubiquitous Computing course decided to ride the experimental wave and install a “Walk & Workstation” or a simply, a treadmill with a table across it.

I loved it! One evening while programming, I walked a little over 2 miles during the course of about 90 minutes. I felt so accomplished. I lost concentration only once while walking whenever a major bug in our code reared its nasty head. After some intense leaning over the laptop trying to debug the issue at hand, walking and working never bothered me again.

Occasionally, I would walk on it during class. It was weird standing up and walking while the professor lectured. I felt so obligated to sit down, but I consider myself a rebel!

Has your professor done any experimental things with your class?

Chalk Pranking Zeke

The last week of my internship at PROS we decided to prank Zeke (a UH Honors College Alum) who is the main backer behind the big internship program push there. We weren’t sure what to do this summer. Tin foil, toilet paper, sticky notes, or packing peanuts…

Last year, we pranked Zeke by toilet papering his cubicle and stacking many many boxes in his cubicle. Check it out:

We decided to use chalk to write a message to Zeke on top of the very visible parking garage across the street. The message reads “ZEKE 4 PREZ” and could be read from our entire building above the 7 floor!!! He loved it. IOTR.

Good job Matthew, Andy, & Jose!

Lunch Games: Bang & Fluxx

For the past several weeks, we, the interns, have thoroughly enjoyed playing two highly entertaining card games, Bang & Fluxx, during our lunch breaks. Bang is a Western themed Mafia game, and Fluxx is a constantly changing rule based game. Zuhair came up & visited us too!
